Pacific Northwest
- One very coherent and functional state would be in the Pacific Northwest stretching from south from the Alaskan panhandle and considering the Canadian province of British Columbia, all of Washington state in the U.S., and the northern part of Oregon, around to the level of Florence, Oregon. This is a cultural are also. And i remember especially B.C. having many negative thoughts about Ontario and Ottawa. An almost ready new state altogether! Other one could be southern Oregon with northenmost California. And California in itself being in top 10 economies, they could easily declare independence! ;)

Pushing it
- Interesting as this cerebral exercise may be, it's "pushing it" a bit, wouldn't you say. Why complicate things for poor little pupils trying to learn a bit of geography. The author evidently could not find enough ststus quo material to write about. Definitely just for geography buffs. (Matt's Note: I have plenty of "status quo" material to write about but I also enjoy writing for geography buffs.)

Hack it up?
- I became familiar with the Nine Nations in the mid eightys. I think that the idea is unrealistic, but I do not like the artificial lines that define the (United) States borders. So I do not include Mexico and Canada. I think we have too many States. I would divide up Maryland. Delaware would get the eastern shore counties along with the two Virginia counties on the Delmarva Peninsula. West Virginia would get the western Maryland counties. I would expand D.C. out to encompass most of the rest and turn the two (Maryland) senate seats over to them. New England needs to be consolidated. Mass, NH, VT, Conn and RI need to be merged into one. Probably include Maine in that group. The heavy urban influence in elections may be offset by the expansion of the rural vote. That's as far as I would go. This would disolve six states to make 44, six NE states become one and Maryland gone. WV, Delaware and DC grow. Virginia will lose two counties, they can manage with the remaining 93.

What about Gudalajara
- I live in Guadalajara, isn't that in North America, Do not tell me my capital is LA. (Matt's note: In Garreau's book, only northern Mexico is considered in the "Nine Nations" concept.)
