From the article: Mental Maps
Everyone has a special affinity for the place they call home. Where is your town or city located and what makes your hometown a special place? What aspects of the place where you live make it a worthwhile place to live? Be sure to tell us the name of your city! Tell Us Why!

Portsmouth, Virginia

This area had much to offer. There are many good restaurants, movie theaters and retail stores with somewhat reasonable prices. We have many beaches, lakes and ponds. Aswell, we have many bridges and tunnels. On the downside, traffic is terrible. It seems like everyone want to live here. A good place to live close to here is Suffolk, Va. I may move there someday, but for now I'm 3 blocks from work so it would be wise to stay put. My girlfriend and I like to go for walks in downtown P-town(Portsmouth). There is a board walk and many restaurants around this section of Portsmouth and we simply park the truck and walk. Again, traffic is a big problem. Along with congested traffic, there are many drivers with road-rage who are not too far from the edge. Plus, traffic is expected double in the next 2 yrs. So, I may just move even though I love living here with the love of my life!

Virginia

I happen to like it here because this is where I was born and raised. I love the rich history of the area I live in. The last battle of the Revolutionary War was fought in Yorktown, not far from here. The eastern area is aliove with everything Maritime. The worlds largest Naval Base in Norfolk. The oldest continous active duty shipyard in Portsmouth. Mile Post # 1 of the longest intercoastal waterway is also in Portsmouth. You can literally travel from New York to Florida and never have to go into the ocean. We're midway between everything here. We have mountains and coastal plains. We have 4 seasons. I admit though the Summer is kinda warm, but we have short Winters. Except for rush hour traffic, which is just as bad as other areas, you can get from point A to point B within a reasonable amount of time. We have more military bases per capita than anywhere else. We have more tunnels and bridges than the average area. Fall is beautiful. I reckon there are other places, but I'm happy her

Why Do I love where I live?

Even though I was born and raised in California, I LOVE living on the east coast, specially, Virginia. I love the fact that we have four seasons in VA. Sometimes the seasons can be a little extreme like our last winter with 2 feet+ of snow and a tree falling on my car. Or, that this summer was a record for our heat, but it's still four distinct seasons. That's why I love living where I do. :)

Al' Umran

I live in Al' Umran City located in Al Hasa Oasis, Saudi Arabia. I love Al' Umran because it is where I was born and grown up. My memories, families and friends from the childhood. Al’ Umran is a special place to visit. It is surrounded by farms, Al Hasa National Park and sand dunes. Farms are famous with different types of dates, lime, vegetables, cucumbers,…etc. Also, its famous with swimming balls. Al Hasa National Park is a good place to visit and enjoy your time from Mid February to May and Mid September to November. Sand Dunes are very attractive in the winter time for daily enjoyment and camping. Months are November to February.

All of Puerto Rico

Not too many places that have a metro area with over 3 million inhabitants minutes from the best beaches, tropical mountain range and near desert coast all within a 100x35mile island!! I came to visit in 1988, returned stateside, sold everything and although traveled all over the world, still here. Not only is the topographical and weather diversity forever grasping at you, the social makeup over the entire island is captivating to those who dare interact. I will still travel big blue, but my bones will rest here in what I humbly consider my heart's nest! I do Love this paradise.

Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico city, one of the largest cities in the world, ancient Tenochtitlan, capital of the aztecs. Mexico City is a city of its own kind, ancient and modern, cosmopolitan and traditional, rich and poor, a city of contrasts. Mexico City is exagerated, its complex, its complicated, you would have to spend many rainy seasons and many subway trips from Indos Verdes to Universidad to understand it. Food in Mexico City is amazing, from the expensive gourment restaurants in la Condesa, to a tacos stand outside a subway station. You can find food in Mexico city at any hour, because there is people willing to eat it. Mexico City is a baroque city in many aspects, as Mexico and mexicans themselves. There are so many things that are unique and special in this city that is quite difficult to name them in such a little space. Mexico city is the murals of Diego Rivera, the holy smell of bread, the volcanic rock of the Xitle, a colorful evening in Coyoacan... So many and so huge things.

Portland, Maine

I'd like to call it food city. Portland benefits from the bounty that the state of Maine provides. Fresh ingredients, which are often local and organic are just outside city limits. The access to the outdoors manifests an adventurous spirit that propelled Portland into the national restaurant scene. For a small town, it has great history, culture, and an active, funky, hip and young population. The ideal community.

Lenexa Kansas

Lenexa is a suburb of Kansas City. It's hard to say why people in Kansas City love it here. The weather is usually too hot or too cold. There's no mountains or beach. But virtually everyone I know who has moved here has stayed, and virtually everyone I know who has moved away has moved back. I think it's just more pleasant than most places.

Western Massachusetts

I love Western Massachusetts: You can live in a small town yet everything is conveniently near: shopping, hospitals, colleges, NYC and Boston. Our hospitals and colleges are some of the best, and though public schools arent, they're not the worst in the nation. Springfield has a high crime rate for a city its size, but surrounding towns have little crime and you can still find nice homes below $200,000. Our taxes are a bit high, but they're not the highest in the USA , MA doen't tax government pensions and most everyone has health insurance here. I don't like the short summer but we have no hurricanes, rarely a small tornado and I've only felt a small earthquake rumble once in 20 years. Our autumns are gorgeous, we have beautiful trees, mountains, lakes and state parks. The winter is long, can be cold, but we don't get as much snow as Buffalo, NY. We've had very little snow this year but when we do, our roads are cleared right away. All in all, this is a great place to live
