5) New Seven Wonders of the World Announced

Much hype surrounded the announcement on July 7 (07-07-07, get it?) of the "new" seven wonders of the world by an agency devoted to marketing and publicity of their selection process. They succeeded.

4) Sealand for Sale

Back in January, the mock-country of Sealand put itself up for sale. As of this writing, no deal has been signed and Sealand apparently remains for sale.

3) Russians Work to Increase Population

Russia has suffered from a declining population for years and this year the country started doing a few things to increase life expectancy and encourage procreation!

2) Al Gore Winds Nobel Prize

In October, it was announced that former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change would share the Nobel Peace Prize for their work to help enlighten the world as to the impacts of climate change.

1) Everyone Wants the Arctic

Now that the Arctic Ocean ice is disappearing (see #6), the northern countries of the world are fighting over the potential resources that might become accessible in the next few years. The U.S., Russia, Canada, and Denmark have all made their claims on the Arctic.
