The year 2007 has been an interesting one in the world of geography. Below I present what I consider to be the top ten geographic news events of the year:

10) Miss South Carolina Teen USA: People Need Maps

Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss South Carolina Teen USA, was in the news in August when she gave a strange answer to a question about geographic illiteracy in a beauty pageant. Disturbingly, as I pointed out, the actual question was quite flawed to begin with.

9) First Female Wins National Geographic Bee Since 1990

In 2007 women also proved that they're excellent at geography when in May, 14 year-old Caitlin Snaring of Redmond, Washington became the first female to win the National Geographic Bee since 1990.

8) Greenland - Future Agricultural Paradise?

In October, researchers announced that thanks to global warming, Greenland might be able to grow agricultural products never imagined on the mostly frozen island.

7) Expanded Daylight Saving Time Begins in U.S.

Daylight Saving Time was extended by four weeks in 2007 in an attempt to save energy. The longer DST began early on the second Sunday of March and extended bast Halloween to the first Sunday of November.

6) Northwest Passage Opening

This past summer, enough Arctic ice melted to allow ships to pass through the Arctic Ocean, saving thousands of miles in unnecessary detours, again, thanks to global warming!
