The United States flag has 13 equal horizontal stripes (for the 13 original colonies) of red alternating with white; there is a blue rectangle in the upper corner bearing 50 small, white stars (for the 50 states); known as Old Glory.

The United States of America is made up of 50 states that cover a total land area of 3,794,100 square miles (9,826,675 sq km). These states vary in their landscapes, sizes and in population but all are important parts of the country and their joining of the Union throughout the late 1700s, 1800s and 1900s is essential to the structure of the United States today.

The following is a list of the 50 states making up the U.S. organized by the year they entered the Union. The states with an asterisk (*) by their names represent the original 13 colonies of the United States.
