Tallest Building in the World

The Burj Dubai building stands over 800 meters (over 2600 feet) and upon opening will be the tallest building in the world. It is more than 160 stories and is a mix of Hotel/Residential/Office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Since its completion in 2004, the tallest building in the world has been the Taipei 101 building in Taipei, Taiwan.

The Burj Dubai building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is scheduled for completion in "late 2009." This building surpassed Taipei 101 in height in July 2007. Upon its opening, the Burj Dubai will be ranked as the tallest building in the world.

Here is the current official list of the ten tallest buildings in the world, as recorded by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, based in Chicago.

1. World's Tallest Building: Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan. Completed in 2004 with 101 stories and 1667 feet (508 meters).

2. Shanghai World Financial Center in Shanghai, China. Completed in 2008 with 101 stories and 1614 feet (492 meters).

3 and 4 (tie). Petronas Tower 1 and Petronas Tower 2 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Completed in 1998 with 88 stories and 1483 feet (452 meters).

5. Tallest Building in North America and Most Stories: Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Completed in 1974 with 110 stories and 1451 feet (442 meters).

6. Jin Mao Building in Shanghai, China. Completed in 1999 with 88 stories and 1381 feet (421 meters).

7. Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Completed in 2009 with 96 stories and 1362 feet (415 meters).

8. Two International Finance Centre in Hong Kong, China. Completed in 2003 with 88 stories and 1362 feet (415 meters).

9. CITIC Plaza in Guangzhou, China. Completed in 1996 with 80 stories and 1283 feet (391 meters).

10. Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen, China. Completed in 1996 with 69 stories and 1260 feet (384 meters).

11. Empire State Building in New York, New York state, United States. Completed in 1931 with 102 stories and 1250 feet (381 meters).

12. Central Plaza in Hong Kong, China. Completed in 1992 with 78 stories and 1277 feet (374 meters).
