The New York metropolitan area is the most populous in the United States, with nearly 22 million people calling it home.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released population estimates for Combined Statistical Areas (formerly known as Metropolitan Statistical Areas), Metropolitan Areas (stand-alone or components of CSAs), and Micropolitan Areas. The changes to these terms are discussed in the article Micropolitan and Metropolitan Areas of the U.S.A. from 2003 here on my site.

Most will likely be interested in the total populations for the thirty largest metropolitan areas, those urban and suburban areas containing populations above 1.9 million. The largest metropolitan areas remain 1) New York, 2) Los Angeles, 3) Chicago, 4) Washington D.C., and 5) Boston.
