Definition: The world's largest nonprofit scientific and education institution, the National Geographic Society was incorporated on January 27, 1888.

Members of the National Geographic Society receive the magazine National Geographic (which can also be purchased at newsstands). The magazine is published by the National Geographic Society in 30 languages around the world. The magazine is the sixth most popular in the United States, circulating nearly 5.5 million copies a year.

The National Geographic Society also supports world exploration, cartography, and geographic education. They sponsor the National Geographic Bee and have developed geography curriculum for classroom use. The Society's maps and atlases are some of the finest in the world.
