Definition: A flat, low-lying area near a river or stream which is subject to flooding.
Common Misspellings: flood plain
Examples:
The floodplain of the Mississippi River extends for many miles in either direction of the river. The Mississippi flooded much of its floodplain in the great floods of 1993.
