Fall Line

Definition: An abrupt line where the upland or hills meet the plain; distinctive because if a river crosses the line, there will be waterfalls there.
Examples:
The fall line between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains is a place where many cities developed because boats could not head upstream from the fall line so good had to be offloaded at the fall line.
