Members of the United Nations
Dateline: 04/23/99 (Rev. 07/31/09)From 51 members in 1945 to 192 members in 2002, the United Nations has steadily grown since it was founded. The increase in member states generally reflects the growth in the number of countries in the world. Below the chart is a table that lists the years that membership increased. Note that membership in the United Nations never decreased.
The largest jumps in membership occurred in 1955 with the addition of 16 members, in 1960 with the addition of 17 members, 1991 with the addition of 7 members, and 1992 with the addition of 13 members.
