This is a fantastic road atlas! Mapquest.com teamed up with the National Geographic Society to develop an atlas willed with beautiful and informative road maps of North America. This atlas will keep you from ever wanting to use one of the traditional road atlases again. Though annual editions have been published for a few years, the Deluxe 2000 edition of the National Geographic Road Atlas is better than ever.
Each state and province map includes vivid color and shading that provides an excellent indication of terrain and topography. Local maps of over 200 cities provide a great overview of the city and are often all you’ll need to navigate around town. On my recent road trip to Portland, Oregon, I found myself relying more on my detailed Road Atlas map of Portland than on the detailed AAA map of the city that I had brought along.
This new edition also includes climate maps for the U.S. and descriptions and maps of thirty-six scenic drives ranging from 45 minutes through the Oxbow Overlook Scenic Byway in North Dakota to three to five days through the Klondike region of Alaska and Yukon Territory.
When I’ve used the atlas, I’ve found the mileage indications, route information, inclusion of almost every town along the road, and point of interests extremely valuable. Furthermore, the atlas is spiral-bound, allowing much more wear-and-tear than most road atlases. This 168-page atlas is the traditional size of an atlas at approximately 15 x 11 inches but contains more pages than most.
Indexed in the back of the atlas are the page and grid location for counties, cities, and towns along with population for each. While browsing the index, I found towns with as few as fifty inhabitants.
This atlas is a wonderful resource for travel and for home reference; don’t hit the road without it!
