Gift Ideas for Geographers

The holidays are here again so that means it's time to buy gifts for your favorite geographers and everyone else who's interested in geography (and honestly, who isn't interested in geography?). As your Guide, I'm here to help you with some gift-giving ideas this holiday season.

Books & Atlases

The just-released National Geographic Desk Reference is not to be missed, it's a fantastic reference book that features chapters on all aspects of geography, from migration and political geography to soils and bioregions.

Also recently released is the tenth edition of world's greatest atlas, The Times Atlas of the World. Years in the works, this comprehensive edition includes 125 color maps and almost a quarter of a million place names.

If your favorite geographer doesn't already have a copy of my book, The Handy Geography Answer Book, be sure to pick them up a copy. My book includes 1000 fun questions and answers about geography and the world.

A happy holiday season always starts out with a brand new, hot off the press, World Almanac and Books of Facts or Time Almanac 2000. While they're not strictly geographical, almanacs have a plethora of world statistical data which all geographers love. Don't bother with a hardcover edition of these, every geography fan needs a new copy every year!

Globes

Every geographical home needs a globe. National Geographic recently introduced new world globes, several of which are available from their National Geographic Store (browse their online store for a lot of great geographic ideas, too). The online Rand McNally Store also sells nice globes.
Wall Maps

A beautiful Raven Map of the world, the United States or your favorite state is always a welcome gift. Raven maps are truly outstanding; their slogan of "The World's Most Beautiful Maps" is absolutely accurate.

My Buying Maps category of Net Links provides links to additional sites that offer maps, globes, and more.

Software

Consider a gift of great reference software - Encarta Interactive World Atlas 2000 or The Complete National Geographic CD-ROM. Geography-friendly games include SimCity 3000 and Civilization: Call to Power.

Knick-Knacks

GPS (Global Positioning System) units continue to provide geography fans and outdoor enthusiasts hours of fun. They can be purchased at sporting goods and electronic stores for about as low as US $100.

Fill a stocking with Terracarta, a deck of playing cards printed with maps of the fifty states and facts about each state. Resource Games also produces two other geography-related games.

If it's weather gear what you're after, be sure to stop by Wind & Weather.
