I'm frequently asked to provide the elevations of places around the world. Thus, I'll let you in on my three favorite sites for obtaining such information...
For places in the United States, the Geographic Nameserver is the greatest! Simply type in a place name and you'll get some data, including the elevation, of that place. Some trickier searches require the Geographic Names Information System - Online Data Base Query Form, which is a much larger database than the Nameserver.
For places outside of the U.S.A., use the World Climate site because it often provides the precise elevation for the weather station in cities around the world. You'll need to actually click on one of the climate records for the station (or place) you're interested in (such as the record for "Average Temperature.")
