1998 Geography Bee Winner

Petko Peev from Michigan won the final round of the 10th annual National Geography Bee on May 20, 1998 in Washington D.C.

Bulgarian-born Peev has represented Michigan for the the past three years. He defeated 56 other finalists to win a $25,000 scholarship and a trip to Hong Kong. Peev, from Grand Rapids, beat 13-year-old J.B. Kizer of Portsmouth, Ohio in the final question of which European Union country has the largest population. Kizer wrote Russia (the largest country in Europe) but Peev had the correct answer of Germany. Kizer goes home with a $15,000 scholarship.
