Atlases are essential references for every home. This list will help you choose the right atlas to meet your needs for travel, reference, education, or for armchair exploration.
1) Goode's World Atlas
edited by Edward B. Espenshade, Jr. My most frequently used atlas. While it's smaller than most, it provides a plethora of excellent maps. Goode's the staple of geographers - it's hand size makes it an invaluable reference atlas for one's desk although just about everything you're looking for will be found inside its pages.
2) National Geographic Road Atlas : United States, Canada, Mexico
This is absolutely the best road atlas of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The maps are crisp, clear, colorful, and very informative. It's my top pick among road atlases - there's really nothing quite as good and the differences between this atlas and its nearest contender are quite considerable. Don't go for second best.
3) Times Atlas of the World
by Times Books Staff. The tenth edition of world's greatest atlas. Years in the works, this comprehensive edition includes 125 color maps and almost a quarter of a million place names. No atlas is more comprehensive or detailed than the Times, it's the most trusted source for geographic information. Every geographic home should own a copy.
