What is the status of Tibet?

While Tibet was once a theocratic Buddhist kingdom and an independent country after 1912, Tibet was invaded by China in 1950. Tibet was given mild autonomy under a puppet communist government and ethnic Chinese were moved into the region to moderate the influence of and to outnumber the Tibetan Buddhists.

China's Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) comprises less than half of historic Tibet and was created by China in 1965 for administrative reasons.

The Government of Tibet in Exile fights for the independence of Tibet.
