Seven U.S. states are named after sovereigns - four are named for kings and three are named for a queen.

Georgia is named for England's King George II, North and South Carolina are named for King Charles I of England, and Louisiana is named for King Louis XIV of France. Virginia (and thus West Virginia) was named for Elizabeth I, the "Virgin Queen" of England while Maryland is named for Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I of England.
