Which states have the fewest people?

Based on the latest population estimates (July 1, 1999) by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the five least populous states are:

  1. Wyoming - 479,602
  2. Vermont - 593,740
  3. Alaska - 619,500
  4. North Dakota - 633,666
  5. South Dakota - 733,133
At the time of the 1990 Census, Alaska was second, Vermont was third, North Dakota was fourth and Delaware was fifth.
