New geography intern Jordan Fisher provides us with this interesting article about urban slums (also known as favelas) around the world. In major urban centers of developing countries, a significant number of citizens live in ad hoc slums, some which have become quite permanent. Favelas, as these urban slums are called in Brazil, are in the news as Rio de Janeiro plans and prepares for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
