Google's April Fools' Day Joke

By April 1, 2012

This year's April Fools' Day joke from Google is geography-related and (in my humble opinion) hilarious! In this funny video Google explains that they've formatted their maps to work with the 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES is one of the most popular gaming systems ever produced. However, the NES graphics are somewhat limited so Google Maps provides a version of their maps in much lower resolution, with very Nintendo-looking graphics for roads, forest, mountains, rivers, and the like. If you don't want to watch the video, you can go directly to Google Maps and click "Quest" in the upper-right-hand corner of the map for the limited time that this fun modification is available.

In other, non-April Fools related news, Google Maps now provides estimated driving time between destinations in the United States based on current traffic data. Check it out!

Not only is Google maps 8-bit technology funny but it’s fully implemented for our region of the galaxy. Yes, electricity is a wonderful Thang.

Be sure to check out your own residence in beautiful 8-bit technology.

Thanks, Matt, for your note.
