Celebrating 15 Years of Geography at About.com

By March 23, 2012

Follow me on:

It's my fifteenth anniversary as your Guide to Geography for About.com! My site was launched in March 1997 as one of the first sites to be "live" on what was then known as The Mining Company. Here's what my site looked like back in October 1997, thanks to the Wayback Machine. I'm embarrassed to share this but my first article was this dated overview of finding disaster information online. When my site began, I was a recent graduate of UC Davis and I had just applied to graduate school, which I would begin in the fall.

During that first year I posted my first geography quiz and began my weekly Geography Newsletter (back then, I manually maintained the email list as a text file, which I pasted into Eudora in the BCC field.) At the time, getting my site listed in Yahoo's directory was making it big. In 1997, Palau was the world's newest country and East Timor wouldn't gain independence for five years. In 1997, I used dial-up to connect to the Internet to update my site from home on my desktop.

Thank you to everyone who has visited my site over the past fifteen years. I look forward to my next fifteen years and beyond!

This retired math teacher has enjoyed your site from the beginning. Thanks for the excellent product and may you continue educating us about the world around us. Having “spent” a couple of summers in Antarctica and more time elsewhere around the world, I’ve appreciated the topics you, and your interns, have covered.

I looked at your first Geo quiz and noted that you suggested doing research, then checking the answers. I’ve always tried to answer the Q’s without looking up any info-this will no doubt help my score.

Happy 15th!

Thanks for sharing, and congrats on 15 years! Although, I’m surprised at how little has changed on internet pages. Admittedly the tools are much easier to use and hookup is much faster, but you must have been forward-thinking as the layout isn’t that different.

(18) Anna says:

Well done, Matt! I always enjoy the newsletters and the site is invaluable in providing and checking information for the Geography rounds of the quiz I prepare on a regular basis.
Long may you continue…

(21) Brian Larrow says:

Don’t know how long I’ve been on the site, but that’s because it’s been at least the better part of the last decade [hmm wonder how to check]. Congrats on making it this far and consistently producing quality articles. I am also glad that we are in total agreement over the number of countries in the world and that I still have the chance to be reminded that I don’t actually know everything about geography. After some of the quizzes this fact is all too apparent!

I still always forward to the quizzes and hope there will be 15 more years to come.

(25) Steve says:

Like having a geography website with up-to-date news and topics. My only dislike is your World Cup article, which is based on a faulty premise. FIFA membership was not, until fairly recently, based on nationhood, but rather on governing bodies. Soccer in American Samoa, for example, is not governed by USSF but by the American Samoans. The four UK ‘countries’ were granted the right to play separately as the result of their contribution to the beginnings of the game. More recently, Gibraltar were denied UEFA membership because of complaints by Spain, at which point it was belatedly decided that future applicants had to be nations.
