It's my fifteenth anniversary as your Guide to Geography for About.com! My site was launched in March 1997 as one of the first sites to be "live" on what was then known as The Mining Company. Here's what my site looked like back in October 1997, thanks to the Wayback Machine. I'm embarrassed to share this but my first article was this dated overview of finding disaster information online. When my site began, I was a recent graduate of UC Davis and I had just applied to graduate school, which I would begin in the fall.
During that first year I posted my first geography quiz and began my weekly Geography Newsletter (back then, I manually maintained the email list as a text file, which I pasted into Eudora in the BCC field.) At the time, getting my site listed in Yahoo's directory was making it big. In 1997, Palau was the world's newest country and East Timor wouldn't gain independence for five years. In 1997, I used dial-up to connect to the Internet to update my site from home on my desktop.
Thank you to everyone who has visited my site over the past fifteen years. I look forward to my next fifteen years and beyond!
