I went to Jordan (I can’t remember the year, in the sixties?) to start up a small oil refinery in Zarka. I commuted to the Hotel Philadelphia in Amman near the royal enclave and the Roman ampetheatre. I do remember that getting a visa was difficult. I had to have documentation that I was not a Jehovah Witness, a felon, a Jew, and had to jump though other hoops.

The Biblical Jerusalem was then in Jordan. I visited the historic route of Jesus, Stations of the Cross, Bethlehem and Jericho which was a huge UN refugee camp. Thousand s of people none of whom did any work what so ever.

King Hussein would drive like crazy and others were expected to get off the road for him. Of course I didn’t know this. I met an English girl who taught the King’s children and royals. Getting into the royal compound was a challenge. Submachine guns though the driver’s window and mirrors rolled under my car.

At that time US aid was more than half of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan’s budget.
