The September equinox takes place on Friday, September 23. At precisely 5:05 a.m. Eastern Time and 09:05 UTC, the earth will be directly above the equator, beginning the season of fall or autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The sun will rise at approximately 6 a.m. and set at 6 p.m. (local solar time) for much of the earth's surface; the north pole will remain dark until the March equinox.

Um, you say *what* is directly above the equator?
You probably meant some variant of “the sun appears to be directly above the equator.” Otherwise I don’t understand the statement and would love to be informed. Please fill me in.
