One of my favorite geographical blogs is GeoCurrents and Martin Lewis' recent post on geopolitical anomalies is just great. He has published an incomplete map of unstable or uncertain entities around the world but the map is so busy, it is easy to see the state of the world is far from stable. You can also find my collection of articles about various aspects of political geography here on my site.

One of the nice things about the article is that the author does not fall into the trap, which so many Americans do, of confusing the concept of “country” with sovereign state. As he points out, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Kingdom of Denmark are all sovereign states consisting of several countries.

State is a political Unit, Country is a Geographical Unit and The Nation is a cultural Unit when it incorporate all with in it then it is the best form of any entity on the Globe.

The author mentioned Lesotho as an “encapsulated state”, but not mention Gambia, which is (pretty much, except for its coastline) an encapsulated state inside Senegal.
There seems a thin line between Geography & Cultural Anthropology. It seems to me that greater effort should be made to separate the two academicaly. Most of the Martin Lewis article seem to ignore such separation of these disciplines.
I’ve been receiving this newsletter for some time. This is the most interesting article/link it has contained.
