Atlantic hurricane season begins Wednesday, June 1. This week (May 22-28) is National Hurricane Preparedness Week so the FEMA Blog is posting regular updates and information about preparing for hurricanes as this year's hurricane season gets underway. NOAA predicts an above-average season between June 1 and November 30 with: "12-18 named storms, which means storms with winds of 39 miles per hour or higher; 6 to 10 of these storms could become hurricanes, which means winds of 74 mph or higher; and 3 to 6 of these hurricanes could become major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5), which means winds of 111 mph or higher."
