Alot of jobs do need geographical analysis in them, one just needs to know where to look because many of these jobs do not have “geographer” in their title. Jobs dealing with marketing, resource management, planning, and customer analysis all require the ability to process spatial data.

Good luck finding those jobs. I’ve been on the market for 5 years with an M.S. in Geography, and all I can find is part-time work. I’m sure there are several jobs for GIS and GIT people, but I’m a cutural geographer and prospects are slim unless one has a Ph.D… Reason #1 why I’m going back.

Alot of times people who go on for Masters or Ph.D. in geography will study some very small niche which is barely geographical in the first place. Students need to realize their academic career including their research subject are their resume. Wanting to study “Organizing Research and Resistance” (randomly taken from the Socialist and Critical Geographers webpage) might be all well and good in the weird world of academia but it won’t get you a job in the real world.
