The BBC provides a updated country-by-country overview of unrest throughout the Middle East. Unfortunately, the map only provides navigation but when you select a country it provides a nice collection of data on the right-hand side, including an "unrest index" of turmoil in the country. In addition, check out these recent overviews of Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia.

(2) Don Hirschberg says:

i have a problem with the literacy rates listed. Judging by the US I think they are much too high. Sometimes literacy rates presume x number of years in school automatically makes a student literate. Nonsense, in the US some HS graduates have difficulty reading their diplomas. While my 2007 Almanac says the US is 97% literate other sources say much less. Job application forms require a very low level of literacy yet only about 85% can cope with them without help. And a better test of literacy is to have the test taker read a simple paragraph and then answer questions about what the paragraph says. Less than 85% can pass this type test. Alas, the US literacy rate has been decreasing for years.
