There has been much attention to the world's population crossing the seven billion mark sometime in 2011. However, if one looks at current world population estimates, it is quite likely that the world population will not reach the seven million mark before 2012.
The U.S. Census Bureau's Population Division estimates the July 1, 2011 global population at merely 6,928,198,253, which is more than 71 million people shy of 7 billion people. Since the annual population increase from July 2011 to July 2012 is estimated at 75,725,430 (and thus the July 1, 2012 population estimate is 7,003,554,291), the world population is not likely to reach 7 billion until mid-June 2012! Regardless of when the world's population hits seven billion, it is worthwhile that much attention is being paid to world population growth and human impact on the planet.

Oh my god! 7 Billion…….cant imagine…
The census people ought to be embarrassed. First to call a ten significant number an estimate, and second to imply that they know the value to that number of significant figures is innumerate. They aren’t even sure of the US Hispanics count to within a million.
The best number that can be said of world population is that it was about 6.93 billion at some month.
7 billion is bad.
Perhaps you should explain the billion you are referring to is the American one which is only one thousand million or a milliard and not the billion used over a large portion of the planet. I thought this was worth mentioning because as you are aware this site will be viewed by lots of nationalities.
