Two significant geographic changes took place today with the beginning of 2011. The first is an annual change that occurs at midnight December 31 each year. At that time, five of the ten non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council end their two-year terms of office and five new members join the council, representing different regions of the world. The United Nations General Assembly elected Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on January 1, 2011.
On January 1, Estonia became the twenty-third European country to begin using the euro as their currency. Estonia makes history by becoming the first former constituent republic of the USSR to join the Eurozone.
