Joining the United Nations Security Council on January 1, 2011 will be five countries selected by the U.N. General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly elected Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms starting on January 1, 2011. These countries will replace Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda (which have terms that expire on December 31, 2010) and will join the five permanent member countries and five non-permanent members which have terms that expire on December 31, 2011.
