While we're all likely familiar with the international Human Development Index developed by the United Nations, the Social Science Research Council has developed an American Human Development Index that ranks states, congressional districts, and top metropolitan areas. There are detailed and comparative charts and demographic data available for each geographic area. The American Human Development Index is unfortunately based solely on four factors - life expectancy, highest degree attained, school enrollment, and median income. Regardless, additional demographic data are available for comparison and in the charts. (Hat tip to Andrew Mantranga for the link!)
