Geographer Sam Chacko contributed this fascinating article about Indian identity and what it means to be Indian in a diverse country of nearly 1.2 billion people speaking over 1600 languages and dialects. Also, don't miss additional articles and resources about India here on my site.

Nothing works in India because each province has a tariff and licensing system to support the local bureaucracy and their stamps. It is the single least accessible nation in the world with all its toll booths and internal customs officials. In one striking program on trucking across India it was estimated the trip took seven days.In the US,Canada,China,Africa,South America, the trip would take one day.It has failed to undermine these provincial bureaucrats and has only managed to create chaos. This nation is not alone for Brazil for decades had the same problem until they decided to halt this major source of delay and create a national market.
It is almost impossible to create a national market unless India makes a decision to do so.The biggest draw of the provincial government job is rather simple, air conditioned offices. If you want these bureaucrats to cede their power do what the Chinese did, take them to the fields and re-educate them.
Very intresting article. Finally someone has spoken my mind. I am ‘an indian and a christian’. I ‘ve lived in India until my early teenage years. For years, Christians in India have gone through tremendous persecution for thier faith.
The world saw what hindu militants were capable of on January 22, 1999 when Graham Staines and his two children Philip& Thimothy, aged 10 and 6 were burned alive. Staine gave his whole life for the poor and the lepers in Orissa. The unthinkable happened again in Orissa in 08. Hundreads of christians were attacked and atleast 20 of them died.
The persecution of Christians still continues.
Many of the churches who are attacked never report such incidents. If reported the authorities will not not take actions against the culprits. One of my family members was taken to a local police station in North India for attending a small gathering at a church believer’s residence.
I usually write on energy and population issues but today I saw a “60 Minutes” segment on CBS in which Bill Gates and wife (and a cloying network) are trying to help northern India with money.
By distributing large amounts of money the Gates figure they can prevent the death of millions of babies, HIV infected people, and those actually staving.
Eau contraire, I say the Gates are increasing human suffering.
India has a food problem. Not enough food for their people. Yet this magnanimous Gates program is designed to let millions more conceptions per year to survive and starve. Absolutely insane.
Bill Gates is perhaps the luckiest and dumbest person in history.
