We are five years away from the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals. With that in mind, there is going to be an international conference at the end of the month in New York for world leaders to meet to accelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goals. The United Nations provides an update as to the status of each goal. Unfortunately, many of the goals are nowhere close to being met. The updates include: "Progress to end hunger has been stymied in most regions," "A decisive response to climate change is urgently needed," "Child deaths are falling, but not quickly enough to reach the target," and "Hope dims for universal education by 2015, even as many poor countries make tremendous strides." Hopefully the conference will indeed spur action.

As the World rapidly approaches its own set deadlines of the MDGs the score card gives low grades. The major blame goes to the leaders who in one way or another failed to give the desired leadership. The failure to meet the expected targets of the first goal (elimination of hunger and poverty) is not only disheartening but unfortunate when the people the leaders so proudly ruling live in adject poverty with no guaranteed meals. Claims may be made on intentions contained in ‘good’ policy statements and programmes, but the failure to realize them due to implementation shortfalls is indeed at the doorsteps of the leaders for failing to supervise. As they assemble in New York, they should first of all apologies to their subjects and peg pardon for their apparent failures.
