The United Nations General Assembly asked the International Court of Justice to investigate the legality of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence. The court ruled on Thursday, in a vote of 10 for and 4 against, supporting Kosovo's declaration independence on February 17, 2008 by a wide margin. The court's decision is not binding but is an advisory decision for the United Nations General Assembly. Serbia, the country from which Kosovo seceded, was disappointed in the decision by the court. Seventy countries recognize the independence of Kosovo, including the United States, United Kingdom, and many EU member states. This decision by the court in The Hague may serve as a precedent for separatist movements around the world. CNN has a story and video.

Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria, Northern Cyprus, and Nagrono-Karabkh, Somaliland all are preparing for a PR push.
I really don’t think this sets any precedent that will help Somaliland. It’s all political. I’m amazed how much ol’ Yugoslavia has been sliced and diced but Somalia has real integrity not to be messed with. What a hoot!
UN or for that matter the international court of law should not be in the business breaking up of sovereign countries unless acts of genocide or gross human right violation are involved.
In Kosovo that was certainly the case!!!!!!!!
But truly what authority does the UN have to force anything? They can pass resolutions and sanction entities but what really becomes of it? Russia and China will be against this measure so without a consensus of the Security Council it will die.
Serbia asked was it legal to announce the independence just like that, was it by international law (it obviously wasn’t cos it’s still not peacefull over there). So, the most developed countries just said we don’t have an explanation, this is why we think it’s ok: countries have voted like this…. 10 for and 4 against. Poor Serbs
The only Albanian I know is called Surreyman, so I guess you know better, genocide and all that
but can you tell me why is still not peacefull over there while people of your nationality have the authority?
