Wealth Disparity in the U.S.

By , About.com GuideJune 17, 2010

Follow me on:

A recent study by Brandeis University has determined that the difference in attained wealth between whites and African-Americans in the United States is at an all-time extreme. According to the study, white families typically have assets worth about $100,000 while African-American assets stand at just $5,000. The reasons for the difference are primarily "racial discrimination and economic policies that favor the affluent." The difference between the two groups has increased dramatically over the past twenty-five years. Read more about the study at The Guardian.

Good article, I thought.

Perhaps one factor left out is the extreme bias of “African Americans” in jail.; they are disproportionately represented there. It’s difficult to earn income or accumulate assets when being incarcerated.

The last statistics I’ve seen show most black children are raised without their father being a member of their family. Many don’t know their father. What does the researcher consider a family?

I think it is quite revealing that neither the author nor any reader has responded to my comment above.

Don-
I am not sure what is “revealing” I am neither the researcher nor the journalist who wrote the story. I simply blogged based on the Guardian article. You’re welcome to track down the study to find an answer to your question.

Perhaps some might be interested in my response to Matt’s email sent to my email address. I thought I was sending a pesonel email to him. No problem. I would say the same to the whole world.

Dear Matt,

Thanks for taking an interest, but I don’t really have a question.

What’s “revealed” is that political correctness acts as a powerful censor. People back away and remain mum when there is the least risk of sounding racist. It has become mere reflex action to many. I am reminded of soccer players making exaggerated moves to avoid being called for a hand ball. Not me, not me !

Of course I am not justified in reaching this conclusion from merely the present case but from the accumulation of many incidences over recent years,.and the taboo seems to be getting worse. Regards, Don
