The United States military, which created and operates the Global Positioning System that provide the signals that allow the efficient operation of our personal GPS devices, is going to add three satellites to the 24-satellite system. The primary reason for three new GPS satellites is to increase the accuracy of GPS in Afghanistan where the local terrain is quite diverse and military operations are hampered by a lack of a strong signal. However, a 27-satellite GPS will improve the accuracy of GPS units for users worldwide.
