Is Russia's Population Growing?

By , About.com GuideJanuary 2, 2010

Follow me on:

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was pleased to announce that for the first time since 1995, Russia's total population saw a net increase. The Russian population grew about 20,000 in 2009 to 141.9 million (down from a peak of about 148 million in the early 1990s). While 20,000 might not be a lot of people, it does represent that Russia's population might be stabilizing and might not decrease to the 111 million that has been predicted for 2050. In addition Putin announced that life expectancy from birth is now nearly 69 years (versus above 82 in Japan). Is this good news for Russia or will population continue to decline through high death rates and brain drain?

can we really take with complete confidence any statistics formulated by the russian government? I would much rather have outside organizations carry out a comprehensive census on russia so that we really know where the situation stands. My guess is that Putin – as per usual – is being disingenuous about things because he senses his own political vulnerability. Honestly, these statistics could be fabrications or quasi-fabrications.

It’s probably true. The census and its predictions never come out correctly because they are done under the assumption that the world is not changing. For example, the economic collapse has pushed back immigration into the US dramatically. For the first time ever, more people are leaving than coming from India because they feel the standard of living is higher in India if you are upper income.

I think they are right because of all the assumption going on they are removing from there homes to come to a more interesting place like Australia because there own country isn’t good enough

It’s probably true as more and more flock to the Russian Orthodox Church thereby increasing unions and families. Also the government is giving people more incentives to have children. I see that only increasing over time especially under Putin.
