Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall at 3,212 feet (979 meters), might be reverting to its indigenous name. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez would prefer Angel Falls to be called Kerepakupai-Meru (which means "waterfall of the deepest place") in the local Pemon language. Angel Falls was named after Jimmy Angel, who is thought to have been the first non-local to spot the falls, which Angel did from the air.
Update: Here's an interesting article with a response from Jimmy Angel's niece Karen Angel.

We certainly have gone back to indigenous names at a number of places in the USA. If the Venezuelan congress votes for it, why not call the falls by their original name?
why not call it Chavez Falls?
Chavezze is a *&^%(*)#$ 20th world Idiot (as aposed to 3rd world
Chavez should only be allow to change the name if he can pronounce the new name three time fast without messing up.
Names were changed to suit the conquistadores and adventurers. Black Hills should be known by its Lakota name, Paha Sapa. Ayer’s Rock (who cares about Mr Ayer?) is now Uluru. BOmbay has become Mumbai. in Malaysia, all the old street names are almost gone, replaced by names which has significance to the Malays and other inhabitants. Penan people already control the Tepui in that part of the world. For those who visit and understand the native people would gladly welcome the change.
Sorry, Pemon people, whom I have visited. Penan people whom I have also visited, live in the tropical rain forests of Borneo.
“Vodopad Samogo Nizkogo Mesta”
Can half of the worlds population even pronounce the new name? Kerepakupai-Meru Falls. I know I can’t pronounce or even spell the new name! Please!
Chavez is on ego trip to change all he can about Venezuela, he needs to be stopped, he even changed the country’s name!! I would bet that Simon Bolivar has been turning in his grave since this idiot has taken over one of the most beautiful countries in the world and is on a mission to destroy it!. Venezuela belongs to Venezuelans not Chavez!
