That does not shoock me that Iraq and Afganistan are in the top 5! Nor Samalia!!! With all those pirates!!! It is weird there has not been any major pirate “hold-ups”. Don’t you think?

All the 5 listed as most corrupt countries are in a state of conflict and instability and efficient application of the rule of law is not expected . One would not be surprised that corruption thrives under these circumstances. Unfortunately this leaves leaders of countries like Nigeria feeling less corrupt than others and may not feel the pressure to improve.
Baba . Abuja, Nigeria.

USA war(intrests) and intervene has forced the internal situation of Afghanistan,Iraq,Sudan (among 5 crrupts)to become most crrupt countries.Actually these counties should not be held responsible but the one which has created all that.

So Finland’s number one spot is gone, congrats to Kiwis and I’m glad actually… We’re sick and tired of this election-funding crisis already (which i’m sure dropped Finns to number 6). Are politicians wise enough animals to actually LEARN something??

(7) Benedict Odey says:

it is no suprise as for the aforementioned countires, but lest we forget also that there are some countries that are politically unstable and economically handicapped by the recent events in these countries. let us take for example countries in the west african sub region such as Guineea Bissua,Guinea,Togo, Niger. these countries are spirally downwards on the corruption index as there is near absence of rule of law, illegalm arrest of civilians on forged allegations based on national security but under the guise of ethnicity, sit tight power struggle e.t.c.

It is no real surprise that NZ does so well. Before they break their arms slapping themselves on the back I will remind all who listen that they face nowhere NEAR the social problems that we have in the US of A.

(9) Ron Lankford says:

With Afghanistan and Iraq placing second and fourth, I am further convinced that the US forces should leave ASAP, not waiting another 18 months, and not wasting another life. Let these people kill each other, as they have for centuries; we will never “win” in such a climate of hate.

(10) Evelyn S. Myrthil says:

The world now needs a new league “Des Nations Integres” to go after the corrupt countries and fight them with rhetoric to overexpose their flaws and weaknesses through every accessible media. A “Nation Integre” is not defined by its fire-power or wealth and is definitely nonviolent and upholds freedom of expression.
The thought is refreshing.

(15) Anthony says:

I do not know what criteria was used to determine the most corrupt countries in the world but when you omit countries like Nigeria, India, Venezuela and the Philippines then you ask yourself what were the authors of this report was smoking in their pipes. In the case of Iraq and Afghanistan it is the US hard working taxpayers dollars that are thrown by the US government to theives or so called leader….no wonder “Mayor” Karzai goes around with his green robe representing the greenbacks an insult to the American People.

(16) N.O.A says:

I agreed with other countries listed as most corrupt countries in the world but their is a mistake somewhere. How can you drink and smoke before you start to list these countries and forget Nigeria which is 100times most corrupt country in the wolrd?

January 27, 2010 at 11:41 am
(17) Snorri says:

According to that list, Iceland is the eight least corrupt countries in the world. Are you kidding me? Iceland is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Not only is the entire Icelandic financial market corrupt and without any ethics, but the politicians as well. Most if not all politicians in Iceland are corrupt, like most criminals, they do not know the difference between right and wrong. Many of them have broken the law while in office, but they get away with it. Transparency International has no idea of what is going on in Iceland. They ask Icelandic politicians if there is any corruption in Iceland. How can anyone expect anything else from dishonest people to answer any other way, then by saying, no there is no corruption here? If you ask a corrupt person if he is corrupt, then he will, without any doubt say that he is not.

(22) Tunde says:

Well it is good to know this vital info from you Matt but what are criteria and standard set to come up with the list. what are your hypothesis to conclude on the list.

Is it the American illegal occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan that are corrupt or the government of these countries because i know for sure the citizen of these countries are living under siege and you cant say a slave is corrupt if not the master.
Sudan on the list suprise shows you are not fair with this result with all due respect.

Where is USA fall to where we record over 1000 rape cases everyday, different news from the states on corruption. Where did you placed South Africa which from the Government to the citizen flourish in corruption.
where did you placed Pakistan and Nigeria.
please i need to know. And please be fair with your result.

(23) rick says:

The international bankers and the multi-national corporations corrupted the u.s.a. government long ago. You don’t have to take my word. Do your research! Start with the world bank and the IMF etc. Read the ”Structual adjustment program” of these two banking giants. They’re based in Washington d.c. Read what Thomas Jefferson said about banks. Gen. Smedley D. Butler wrote a book after he retired from the marines; War is a racket; never so many has been sacrafice for so few. Remember… when you point a finger at someone…five fingers maybe pointed at you!!

Proud to be a Singaporean. Yeap, safe and corrupt-free here but we’re one of the smallest countries in the world so I guess its not a fair comparison. I mean our country is a dot on the world map, and made up of one main city, probably a lot easier to manage than most nations much larger than us.

I think US is the most corrupt country because of involvement of money laundering (like marshal island, cayman islands are made for this purpose), steeling natural resources from other countries (e.g Iraq, Saudia, cuba, Kuwait, Afghanistan etc)

This is not correct, Nigeria is not among the first five, Please get your imformation corrected. in Nieria currupt is every where, 99.9% of politicians, 80% pastors in house God, 95% civil servants in office and almust 90% of police. 90% of the traditional institutions. for someone to tell me Nigeria is not among the first five that ir not true.

(36) Chaz says:

This list is clearly compiled based on statistical analysis of criteria that we as readers do not have access to. All the comments instructing the list writer which countries should or should not be included on the list and providing anecdotal evidence or statements to justify their position only represents the fact that people making these comments do not understand how this list was compiled and exactly what it is intended to represent.

Furthermore, at least a statistical analysis displays information based on a standard set of criteria, if the list writer simply wanted to ‘decide’ which countries are or are not corrupt any list he compiled would be entirely arbitrary and without any merit.
