Kilimanjaro Ice Disappearing

By , About.com GuideNovember 3, 2009

Follow me on:

Eighty-five percent of the ice at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in 1912 has disappeared. Furthermore, the ice in the glaciers at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro has decreased a whopping 26% since 2000. According to examination of ice cores from the glaciers, melting as we're seeing currently hasn't occurred in the last 11,700 years (that's 117 centuries and nearly 12 millennia!). The melting of the ice atop Mt. Kilimanjaro is further proof that global warming is occurring. The New York Times has the story.

Dear Matt,

The ice in the Himalayas is following the same trend like Mt. Kilimanjaro due to global warming. No more peaks to conquer in the future just bare land. The Geography Group, under your command ,should organize a campaign to influence governments to reduce the carbon emission.

Before we get our undies all bunched up real bad, let’s pause to note a few inconvenient truths.
– Kilimanjaro has actually been COOLER, not warmer. Kilimanjaro is also drier than before, since high-altitude snowfall has decreased within the cooler central-Africa climate. Thus, Kilimanjaro ice is evaporating, not melting. Correlation doesn’t always mean causality, but lack of correlation does indeed eliminate causality.
– Kilimanjaro snows began receding in the 1920s. This was before the Industrial Revolution began (in England) in the 1840s, or caught on in the USA in the 1860s or in continental Europe in the 1880s. Meanwhile, the overwhelming percentage of man-made pollution has occurred since the 1950s; much of this in just India & China & former USSR lands, since the 1960s. Most Kilimanjaro ice that has ablated, did its disappearing act before 1936. Cause must precede effect.
– Same thing is documented for Himalayan glaciers which, incidentally, are NOT all shrinking. A solid percentage of the thousands of Himalayan glaciers are actually growing … lies to the contrary notwithstanding.

Hence, anthropologic global warming (aka “global climate change”) can NOT be the cause of Kilimanjaro’s ice issue.

Where is Mt. Kilimanjaro? Sudan? Can someone tell me?

I’ve also heard that the retreat of these glaciers can be attributed to deforestation.
I do wish we would put our money and energy into fighting all pollution and stop concentrating on carbon.

Dear Austin Bashore,

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain of Africa and is located in Tanzania. (19,340 ft.) (5,895 m).

Dear Michael Trimithiotis,

Thank you soo much! Boy was I off!!! I Needed that for my Science and S.S projects. Once again, thank you!!!!! :)

One old item, two new.

Old item: clarification.

My prior post has an obvious typo, yet it’s worth being clear about it. Kilimanjaro snows began receeding in the 1820s (eighteen twenties), not (as typed) in the 1920s. Sorry for the typo.

To be clear on the implications: Kilimanjaro snows began ablating a good couple decades before the first of the Industrial Revolution kicked off. Most shrinking of the Kilimanjaro ‘icepack’ had occurred in the century PRIOR TO the exhaust of most man-made industrial pollution had begun.

New Item: deforestation.

Al Gore, when Vice President, led the charge to declassify all the USA’s earliest Spy Satellite photos. Reason … ‘global deforestation’ was all the rage of the headlines, but the movement was losing steam due to lots of assumptions backed with paucity of facts; the photos from the 1960s & 1970s were to provide the facts when compared to 1990s LandSat imagery. Results … the SpySat photos showed that the 1990s had *more* forest coverage than 2-3 decades previously. In the decade since, the old ‘global deforestation’ lies continue to circulate, while their original promoters have failed to correct their original assertions.

Related to forest health, is the health of grasslands, like the Serengeti … anybody heard much recently about the advance of the Sahara? The Sahara is now shrinking again. Hmmm. Seems that here, too, we have assertions too-quickly made despite inconvenient evidence even at the time. And, once these assertions are also turned on their heads, their promoters won’t turn in corrections on this Inconvenient Truth either.

New Item: solar power.

Ol’ Sol was particularly quiet during The Little Ice Age. It was active in the early 1800s, quiet in the mid-1800s, and active since. But it’s activity has varied in intensity of irradience, magnetic flux, and solar wind. Sunspot activity is generally a good visual indicator of all 3 measures. Most ‘global warmists’ (aka ‘global climate changers’) discount Solar activity but consider only solar irradience.
. – Solar activity lessened in the 1900s & 1910s, and Earth also cooled. All the scientific talk on climate concerned a return of the relatively recently discovered Ice Ages.
. – Earth warmed until the 1930s, along with an active Sun.
. – Solar activity lessened in the 1930s & 1940s, and Earth also cooled. Probably since most people were merely struggling to survive, nobody put much time into resurrecting the Ice Age talk. (These were the decades of the worldwide Great Depression and the dual advance of militant Fascism & Socialism.)
. – Earth warmed again in the 1950s & 1960s, along with an active Sun.
. – Solar activity lessened in the 1970s, and Earth also cooled. This was when the early-1900s attention resumed, to “The Impending Ice Age”. (Remember the “Ice Sheet Eats Manhattan” front page headlines in even Newsweek and other popular magazines?)
. – Earth warmed again in the 1980s & 1990s, along with an active Sun. Here we find the Anthropologic Global Warmists conducting their crusade; we now know it as Global Climate Change, since Earth failed to cooperate.
. – Solar activity lessened in the 2000s, with Solar Cycle 23, and Earth also has cooled since 1998.

Today, the Sun quiets. Solar Cycle 24 not yet begun, and Solar Cycle 23 is still hanging on with the occasional single sunspot. For a decade, Earth has been cooling.

Correlation exists between solar activity and global temperatures, and a good case is made for causality, though nobody quite yet understands *precisely* what the causality is.

Conclusion:

Here’s an inconvenient truth that used to be commonly taught & accepted. Bill Clinton’s quite smug 1992 Campaign Staff chortled, after November 1992: “It’s the economy, Stupid!” Perhaps we should paraphrase them here, and throw their own mud back in their faces: “It’s the Sun, Stupid!”
