Radius of the Earth

Thursday September 24, 2009

I frequently receive the question, "What is the radius of the earth?" The radius of the earth varies from a maximum of 3963.14 miles (6378.06 km) at the equator to 3949.9 miles (6356.7 km) at the poles. For related information on the radius of the earth, read my basic earth facts and the size and shape of the earth articles.

Frequently? How depressing, how utterly depressing. I wish I hadn’t read this. A child in the 1930’s would have opened a dictionary and had the answer in a minute. Or an almanac, or an encyclopedia.

Matt, are you being asked this by email? So they are already on line connected to a zillion sources with the answer. How do you respond? If I were to ask you “Where is the Capitol of the US” how would you respnd? Patiently, without irritation?

What do we call this age? Oh yes, it’s “The Information Age.”
