Census Worker Lynched

By , About.com GuideSeptember 23, 2009

Follow me on:

A U.S. Census Bureau worker was found dead, hanging from a tree in the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky. Bill Sparkman, 51, worked part-time for the Census Bureau. He was found hanging from a tree near a cemetery with the word "Fed" carved in his chest. Law enforcement officials are investigating the case as an apparent homicide but suicide has not yet been ruled out.

It strikes me as a little strange that they’d even think of it being a suicide; not many people I know carve “FED” into their chest and hang themselves. It’s more than likely the work of pot growers or even ‘moonshiners’ — though the latter seems unlikely.

That area is not well known for crimes of this nature; however, times change and I guess the local denizens change with it…

With hands and feet bound with duct tape, suicide would have been a miracle. I guess law enforcement in Kentucky doesn’t get as much education as in other places.

I suppose I don’t have as much education either because I sure missed the part about the victim’s hands and feet being bound with duct tape.

Believe it or not, this is why I wouldn’t let my son do this work . . . there was no guarantee as to the area you’d be assigned to . . . think about it — it IS a dangerous job. People are very wary of strangers coming to their house and there’s all kinds of whackos out there.

I just wish more attention would be made to this case. Sad ending to a man’s life that tried to make a difference.

This is sad and scary–it reflects the hate that a vocal minority feels towards Obama and the federal government. Obama isn’t perfect and neither is the federal government–but these rabid accusations about death panels and Obama’s citizenship reflect racism rather than honest disagreement. I read an article about this census worker, and how in his work he served children and made a difference to many. Heartbreaking. How little we’ve changed.

“Carved” was the wrong verb. The letters FED were written with a felt broad-tip pen. See how the media sensationalized the story?
