UN Members

Take a look at my complete listing of the 192 members of the UN along with their date of admission. I found it fascinating that Ukraine and Belarus are considered as having joined the UN as original members in 1945 because there was a deal with the USSR to allow some constituent Soviet republics to have independent representation in the UN.

This is another aspect of the country/ nation debate. Stalin argued that if Canada and Australia and so on had UN representation in addition to the UK (all of which were part of the Commonwealth of nations), then so should Ukraine and Byelorussia (Belarus) as part of the USSR. Churchill even put it to his Cabinet colleagues that maybe their should be only one “Empire” rep, which would of course have increased his own clout at the UN. Of course, there was no way this would have been acceptable to the other countries in the Commonwealth. As usual, the Americans were totally befuddled by the debate because historically they don’t have an appreciation of the difference between a country and a nation.
