The foreign ministers of European Union member countries jump-started Iceland's membership in the international organization by requesting a formal assessment of the country’s fitness to join the EU. Iceland has thus passed several countries in the EU queue, such as Croatia and Turkey. Croatia's membership application is on hold, pending resolution of a maritime border dispute with Slovenia. Despite whatever the EU does to fast track Iceland's membership, Iceland voters will still need to vote to approve EU membership for their country.

all this sounds very jolly, except one forgets that Iceland, when it was still FILTHY rich, snubbed the EU repeatedly. Of course, now they’re broke, we should foot their bills and welcome them warmly, just probably because their EU viking friends want to feel more at home with their superior family. NOT SO!
Yes, the EU is about solidarity, and Iceland was the LEAST generous country for that matter. The EU is no refuge for failed states and would-be financial experts fishermen. They now may keep their debts along with their fish stocks! Farewell superior Iceland!
Hey, Matt – we’ll be in Iceland in a couple of weeks and it will be interesting to talk to “just folks” about the EU membership possibility. You know I’ll ask!
What’s EU membership really all about? The rich supporting the poor or broke? or culture unity and identify. The EU is not doing badly even with a lot of poor members. Iceland certainly belongs culturally to Europe- more so than Turkey.
