A 12 mile-long blob of some sort of organic material is floating in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Alaska. The mass is located in the Chukchi Sea between Wainwright and Barrow and officials are testing the material to determine what it is. The Anchorage Daily News has interesting photos with their article.
Update: The blob has been identified as filamentous (i.e. stringy) algae, "Not bunker oil seeping from an aging, sunken ship. Not a sea monster."

Re: the arctic blob.. surely someone has mentioned to you… all those scifi monsters that were transported to the frozen arctic, to be forever put out of commission by being frozen forever!! Especially, that is what happened to “THE BLOB”
