Curtis Melvin, a doctoral student in economics at George Mason University and the editor of North Korea Economy Watch, has developed a Google Earth layer called North Korea Uncovered which provides "extensive mapping of North Korea’s economic, cultural, political, and military infrastructures." The layer has received extensive publicity since its recent release.

I once saw a “Landsat” aerial photograph of the whole Korean peninsula. All the cities and towns of South Korea were brightly lit up. As soon as you passed the border, North Korea was almost completely dark – almost no electricity anywhere – just one little speck of light marking its capital city. The part of CHINA just to the north, was moderately lit-up (much more so than North Korea).
The contrast reminded me of the sharp difference in forestation between denuded Haiti and the lush Dominican Republic.
