The 47 year-old ban on Cuba's participation in the Organization of American States may be close to over. Members of the OAS voted to allow Cuba to re-join the group upon the island country meeting certain conditions. Before Cuba can again become an OAS member it must be "in conformity with the practices, purposes and principles of the OAS."

Hello. it makes me sick when i hear all these countries dealing with dictators. cuba doesn’t really care about entering since they will not make any changes or adjustments to their system. releasing political prisoners is not an option to cuba. its a hypocrazy from all these countries that voted in favor. it is obvious they dont’ care about the citizens. by the way i am cuban
With Fidel fading and Raoul Castro just getting a feel for running the country, isn’t this a perfect time to extend the hand of fellowship to Cuba, in hopes of the new regime seeing the light, or at least the benefits, of good hemispheric citizenship? Maybe opening doors couldn’t hurt…keeping them closed doesn’t seem to have helped!
There has to be a tempered approach to Cuba. Yes, open doors of opportunity but as long as they comply to offering human and civil rights to their citizens. If the Soviet Union fell why cannot Cuba’s pseudo Marxist Totalitarian regime of buffoons! You have to know that we would be giving in to them and giving more to the same regime Fidel Castro constructed. What you are hoping for is for a filtering effect of economic growth into the general population base which may occur or may continue to be heavily controlled as it is today. My bet is on the former and not the latter. However, I do agree that the attempt should be made. I say to my fellow Cubans..my fellow Cubanamerican bretheren..has anything happened in the last half century to say that the embargo has worked…for who’s benefit..not the Cuban citizens..not for the exiles. Seems like someone else has stayed in power all along without so much as a sniffle in their direction of any significant opposition. Seems like everyone in South Florida (that would be former Cuban nationals with our classical Anti-Castro sentiment) expect the U.S. or the U.N. to intervene on their behalf all the time. They expect the hand to be extended in the same way it has been extended to Europe, Asia, and even the Middle East. Well, we had our Bay of Pigs and our embargo. We need to face facts, the U.S. will not get involved with the Americas. Just look at Hugo Chavez in Venezuela!! Look at Evo Morales in Bolivia!! Look at Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua!! Look at Lula da Silva in Argentina!! Look at Vice president Alfredo palacio in Ecuador!! All this and yet tthe U.S.A. will intervene and change entire political and economic systems for countries abroad with exception (and a significant exception at that) with Latin America. If Cubans cannot get together and figure this out for themselves, then we as a people deserve what we got!! Plain and simple. Let’s ponder that!!
