In a new suburb of Freiburg, Germany, cars are a thing of the past. The community of Vauban, population 5500, prohibits cars in most places and 70% of the community's residents do not even own a car. Vauban is a mixed-use densely populated walking community that was completed in 2006 and is a successful model for the car-free city planning that is typified in the New Urbanism. The New York Times tells the story of this car-free community.
