Did you know that there is a ranking system for streams and rivers that ranks bodies of flowing water on a scale of one to twelve? Learn all about what constitutes a first order stream on up to a twelfth order stream in this fascinating article about stream order from Amanda Briney.

I sorta lost my way after learning a stream has to be no wider than 60 feet. later, streams, such as the Ohio and Amazon rivers are given ratings. I obviously mis-read or missed something?

I would have liked to have seen a table in the article characterizing the rating numbers – such as we find for the Mohs scale (hardness) and the Beaufort scale (wind).

now i really do not get the point of what you mean by “you can read the 1-12 scales of flowing water” and yet I can’t find them.
